Apple is preparing to take another big step in the smartphone hardware sector. According to information shared by famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will start using its own 5G modems instead of Qualcomm’s 5G modems in iPhones starting in 2025. So, in which models will we see these chips?
Apple to make its own 5G modems: Is it time to say goodbye to Qualcomm?
According to Kuo’s report, Apple plans to use 35-40 million of its own 5G modem chips in the iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 17 Air models in 2025. Of course, this will be a start. In 2026 and 2027, this number could increase rapidly, reaching 1.8 billion units. In other words, Apple plans to stand on its own two feet in terms of modems in the future.
The iPhone SE 4 will be the first fruit of Apple’s move. It is said that the model, which will use an OLED screen and Apple’s new A-series chip, will also make a name for itself with its 5G connection speed. On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Air will attract attention with its thin design. However, it is already known that this model will not be as powerful as the Pro and Pro Max models.
This development could be a major blow to Qualcomm. Apple producing its own modems means a serious loss of share from Qualcomm’s 5G chips. Moreover, Apple will be one step ahead in terms of both hardware and software by providing more integration between devices with its own technology.
